The physiological benefits of asana practice are far-ranging. The daily stimulation of the endocrine system causes the level of hormones to be equalized and sustained. Your muscles are toned and alignment corrected. The psychotherapeutic benefits are life changing. Yet all these benefits pale by comparison to the possibility of Yoga—enlightenment.

In advanced practitioners, limberness and tone remain even when asana practice is discontinued, because the source of tightness, which was the identification with limitation, has vanished. The main thing that holds the body tight is the rigid grasping of ego identity. That grasping-and-holding-for-fear-of-losing results in locked organs, nerves, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

The shape of your body is a result of your thoughts, unconsciously and habitually appearing in the form of ego identification, reasserting themselves each moment in the flesh, nerves, blood, organs, bones, connective tissue, and musculature. Mistaking the body/mind for your true identity is the main obstacle to freedom.

Where does the Truth lie? The Truth lies in all things. All things lie apart from the Truth, all things lie a part of the Truth.
